Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions people actually ask.
About Therapy
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If something in your life feels stuck, painful, or overwhelming — and you've been unable to resolve it on your own — therapy is worth exploring. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to start. Many people come to therapy simply because they want to understand themselves better, process a difficult experience, or learn healthier ways of relating to others.
What's the difference between a therapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?
A therapist (like a Licensed Mental Health Counselor) provides talk therapy and evidence-based treatments like EMDR. A psychologist holds a doctoral degree and may also provide therapy and psychological testing. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who primarily prescribes and manages medication. Many people work with a therapist and a psychiatrist simultaneously — the therapist handles the emotional and behavioral work, while the psychiatrist manages medication if needed.
How long does therapy take?
There's no universal answer. Some people find relief in 8 to 12 sessions, particularly with focused approaches like EMDR. Others benefit from longer-term work, especially when dealing with complex trauma, deep relational patterns, or ongoing life stressors. We'll set goals together and regularly check in on your progress so you always know where you stand.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't work?
Not all therapy is the same, and not every therapist is the right fit for every person. If past therapy felt unhelpful, it may have been the wrong approach, the wrong match, or the wrong timing. My practice integrates multiple modalities — EMDR, expressive arts, somatic work, and traditional talk therapy — so we can find what actually works for you.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I provide therapy, not medication management. If medication might be helpful for you, I can refer you to a trusted psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who can evaluate and prescribe. Many clients find that therapy and medication together produce the best results.
Logistics & Fees
How long is each session?
Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Initial intake sessions may run slightly longer as we cover your background and establish goals.
How much does therapy cost?
My standard fee is $150 for a 50-minute session. If you use insurance through Headway, you'll typically pay just your copay, and Headway shows you the exact amount before your first appointment. Either way, you'll know the cost before you commit to anything.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. I offer both in-person sessions at my Winter Garden office (720 Business Park Blvd, Suite 20, Winter Garden, FL 34787 — just west of Orlando) and secure telehealth sessions via video. You can choose whichever format works best for you, and you're welcome to switch between them as needed.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice or no-shows will be charged the full session fee. I understand that life happens — if you have an emergency, please reach out and we'll figure it out.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept credit cards, debit cards, and HSA/FSA cards. Payment is due at the time of service and is processed securely through my client portal.
Insurance
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. I accept many major insurance plans through Headway, a service that verifies your benefits and handles all billing with your insurance company. When you book through Headway, you'll see your exact cost per session — usually just your copay — before your first appointment. See my Insurance & Fees page for the current list of accepted plans.
How does Headway work?
Headway partners with therapists in private practice so they can accept insurance without a big billing department. You book through my Headway profile, they check your coverage and tell you your exact per-session cost upfront, and they bill your insurance directly. There's no extra cost to you for using it.
What if you're not in-network with my plan?
You can work with me as a private-pay client, and I'll provide a superbill — a detailed receipt with everything your insurer needs to process an out-of-network claim. Many plans reimburse a portion of the session fee. Call the number on your insurance card and ask about your 'out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health therapy' to find out.
Can I use insurance for virtual sessions?
In most cases, yes. Insurance plans generally cover telehealth therapy the same way they cover in-person sessions, and Headway confirms this for your specific plan when you book.
Privacy & Confidentiality
Is what I say in therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is protected by law and professional ethics. I will not disclose what you tell me to anyone without your written consent, with very limited exceptions required by law.
What are the limits of confidentiality?
Florida law requires therapists to break confidentiality in specific situations: if there is an imminent risk of harm to yourself or someone else, if there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elderly person, or vulnerable adult, or if a court issues a valid order for records. I will always explain these limits clearly before we begin working together.
Are virtual therapy sessions secure?
Yes. I use a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform through SimplePractice that encrypts all video sessions. Your virtual sessions have the same confidentiality protections as in-person sessions.
What is HIPAA and how does it protect me?
HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is a federal law that protects your health information. It requires me to safeguard your records, use secure systems for communication and storage, and follow strict protocols for any disclosure of your information. Your privacy is not just my ethical obligation — it's the law.
